It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinions; it is easy in solitude to live after your own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Critique My Philosophy of Life?
Over the past few years, I have created my philosophy of life, a 13-page document that may be found by doing the following:

(1) Google "Philo Sofer"
(2) Follow the first link (My Philosophy by Philo Sofer)

I do my best to live my philosophy, and I have found the entire exercise to be personally very beneficial.

My philosophy is a living document, and I welcome any feedback (criticisms, counterarguments, enhancements, or otherwise) that you may have. In fact, the sole purpose of this post is to solicit feedback so that the document may be improved.

Enjoy!

I won't waste my time critiquing someone's philosophy unless they have conviction about their own philosophy.

I stopped reading your document at the second sentence:

"While I am comfortable with my positions, I am not certain of any of them".

I believe that anyone who claims that they are "certain" of their philosophical positions is either dishonest or overconfident.

Besides, if I were certain of my positions, I would not have asked anyone to critique them.

That's what you believe, that's what your stuck with.

Good luck with your philosophy.

I look forward to hearing from those who would like to critique my philosophy.

Silence is the most succinct critique.

Okay, I read it.

My first impression: a thirty three year old late sophomore taking introductory philosophy classes in a mediocre college.

My second impression: someone who takes himself a bit too seriously.

THX 1137:

Since you are clearly so knowledgeable and intelligent--and since you have already read the document--it should be easy for you to provide refutations of at least a couple of the arguments in the document, or counterarguments to to at least a couple of my philosophical positions.

If you refuse to do so for any reason, then you simply cannot be taken seriously.

Your preference is granted.

I look forward to relevant and constructive criticism from others reading this thread.

Philosopher123, what you have produced is hardly a philosophical examination. There are no supporting arguments, and certainly no rebuttals to probable counter arguments. You draw no conclusions. What you have produced is simply a laundry list of what you believe.

For some reason, you felt the need to do a bullet-pointed outline of your own personal dogma. Thinking it somehow self-evident and bullet-proof you put it out there and dare others to punch holes in it. Hardly a philosophical critique.

Obviously you have not bothered to actually read the document. The document is full of arguments supporting specific conclusions. Regarding counterarguments, I am happy to entertain any that you may have. But evidently, you have none.

This concludes our discussion, unless you provide specific counterarguments.

Please note that I have revised the "Negative hedonism" section of the document.

I have also added a new section entitled "Beyond peace of mind".

I look forward to any feedback you may have.
