Electric/hybrid cars
Let's talk about 'em

It seems like a good topic to unite environmentalists with car jocks

Issue #1: Getting cheap, clean energy out of it

Issue #2: Getting lots of power out without the need to refuel often

Anyone have any more issues with electrics?

funny, but...well turbos are actually better for the environment in that they recycle exhaust gas-which contains unburned fuel.
That's cool though, lol.
I like the idea of hybrid vehicles, but I know that it will be awhile before they replace mainstream production engines, and by that time there could be a better solution to the emission problem.

I tried to create a web page about oil independence. I got no support from no one. And what was more disheartening was that the U.S. auto industry doesn't appear to care. I mean, they've posted a few articles and stuff. But Honda and Toyota are the only ones making a real effort here. I've written all the U.S. auto makers and gotten some stupid bland pre made up response. Not good.

We need to become oil independent for two reasons. 1) the Mideast. 2) the environment.

Until these problems reach our back door - we don't give a shit. When it reaches our back door it will be too late.

I have an old 1997 Chevy Sprint. I'm thinking about converting it to a hybrid for my self to drive. It won't cost as much as me buying a new one, as I can't afford one right now. In mother earth news they offer plans - it looks simple enough - I'll keep you posted.

Sounds very, very interesting to me, why don't you post a link to a site that offers them so we can read it.

They don't have the plans for the hybrid on their site yet, but they do have lots of other great information. In a week or two you should find it there.

Oil companies (who are giants in the American economy) are not going to want this technology to become popular because it has the potential to affect their industry in a devastating way. We've had the technology for developing hybrids since the the 1960's and indeed, companies have existed as early as then for the purpose of developing these cars. The problem is the oil industry buys them out and sits on the technology.

With the hybrid and fuel-cell developments, there is a trend towards lessening our dependence on fossil fuel (a limited resource and one that isn't great for our environment). Hopefully, further improvements will eventually make them comparable to fossil-fuel powered cars.

LOL, Supra I know what ya mean man.

On another alternative though, there is a new Cadillac V-12 with VDE setup, which means they shut down a number of cyl. in order to reduce emmisions when not under load.

It's quite simple actually, the computer controls everything nowadays, but the drivers input is always the deciding factor.

So you have this Cadillac with 1,000 hp/1,000 torque, via a V-12. You are driving in town at a stop and go rate -you never shut those cylinders down. You jump on the freeway and put your foot in it -you never shut down those cylinders. You get to a cruising speed, 55 mph or so, and it shuts down eight cylinders or so, and you cruise at highway speed, but if you go to W.O.T. = Wide Open Throttle, they turn back on.
