Decius, i think its wrong for a white person to use the word 'nigger' since it implies so much hatred and is a racist term. Its wrong to be racist therefore its wrong to use racist words. i dont see why sometimes on this site people go on and on about a subject when its a simple right or wrong answer. it is wrong to use deragatory steretypes and especially wrong to use the N word unless your an ignorant bigot of course.

My point is, nigger is not a racist term any longer.

Which is a fact because black people call each other nigger or use the term "my nigger" which roughly translates to "my brother".

So nigger actually means brother in a majority of popculture contexts.

So itisasiseeit, if I were to call you my nigger, would you be offended or somewhat complimented?

Yes some americans and rappers use the word as a term of endearment for some reason or another. maybe because they feel closer and can relate because their ancestors endured 400 hundread years of slavery. so it depends on the context it is being used in and frankly a white person cant say nigger in most circumstances because it would just sound racist or ridiculous. i would be offended if you called me nigger because you dont know me.

But don't we have an ideal that we want everyone to adapt to?

We want people to adapt and become more understanding. But we do not achieve this goal by telling people it should be done and then not acting on it. "Do as I say and not as I do" is an incredibly flawed leadership technique.

So, your problem therefore isn't the concept but that I said the concept.

Be clear about the fact that you are not actually opposing the concept but the source of the concept due to a personal bias, to avoid further confusion and the bloating of threads.

My problem was with your stated idea of telling but not doing.

Fool, should one person concern himself with 300 other people's beliefs or should each individual speak up if being offended to receive clarification?

300 people should each concern themselves with not offending eachother.

You're an idiot.

300 people should each worry about each of the other 300. That means that in total, these 300 people have created 89,700 "worries".

If each offended person speaks up (which would be about 10% of the people on average... but lets say 40% just for fun) that equates 120 people offended for each person. That creates a total of 36,000 "worries" which is half.

If we allocate "worries" to an approximate number of joules of energy used, then a major overestimate would mean that in your perfect world 300 people would use more than double the amount of energy to deal with offending one another than in my world.

I really can't believe I have to write this out. Seriously. This is baffling to me. Your bigotted closed mind has pushed you close to the brink of retardation.

If we took care not to offend each other we would cut down the offenses. Sure it is easiest just to say and do whatever you feel like, but a little effort to achieve unity should be worthwhile. Empathy must be proactive, if change needs to occur then do it yourself.

But it's impossible to not offend anyone when you say something, so if you really don't want to offend ANYONE, then shut up.

it may be impossible to not offend anyone, but perhaps instead of worrying what others would think, just dont use potentially offensive terms in any context or conversation, then you dont have to worry about offending those people, and they dont have to get offended by you.

as for the black person calling another "my nigger" that holds none of the same connotations as a white person saying it, due to the fact that it does not have any history behind it when a black person says it. most black people would probably tell you that they would be offeneded by you saying it, compared to another black person saying it.

as for other stereotypes, while they may not have as strong a meaning as "nigger", they may still be offensive to people. just out of interest why do you say "nigger" or "chink", is there any reason? if there is no need to use something potentially insulting then don't, simple as that.

as for not saying anything, someone is bound to get annoyed with you for not replying to what they say

ithink mostpeople look for reasons to get offended .
its like when someone says something like
"man this ice cream is cod."
i could say
"your mom is cold!"
and if they were stupid enough, theyd get pissed off.
i think that people hear something that they should be getting pissed off about so they make themselves get mad.
its not that they neccesarily are mad. just that they think they should be.

what is the need for you reply though?
people get annoyed, because they assume you are trying to insult them. if someone insults you you get annoyed. unless you were suggesting that the person mum needs to put on a sweater or something, how else can they take it other than as an insult?
