*Making Life Pointless* [+ favourites]

The Dalai Lama states that:

1. Ignorance is an afflictive emotion, Therefore suffering is produced. [this is a problem for the meaning of life]

2. THe assumptions that every even has a cause [Karma]

3.The implied claim that some actions are freely choosen [which means that those actions are not part of Karma]

Yet looking at the statement (1) Many Philosophers would disagree with it. But can you see why, or is there no problem at all. Does the Dalai Lama contradict himself with the statements (2) and (3). What do u believe?

2 and 3 do contradict each other, either everything is part of karm, or it isnt.

As for ignorance, it can cause suffering, but its not an emotion, its a lack of knowledge.

But if you are ignorant, you would know you were suffering.

"ignorance is bliss" - i believe is the correct comment.

I meant if you are ignorant, you WOULDN'T know you were suffering. If you didn't know if some one died or something bad happened, why would you suffer?

due to the conditions of action, consciousness arises
due to the conditions of consciousness, name and form arise
due to the conditions of name and form, the six sense sphere arise
due to the conditions of the six sense sphere, contact arises
due to the conditions of contact, feeling arises
due to the conditions of feeling, attachment arises
due to the conditions of attachment, grasping arises
due to the conditions of grasping, existence arises
due to the conditions of existence, birth arises
due to the conditions of birth, aging and death arises

this mode describes how suffering is produced, therefore ignorance is the cause of suffering, As stated by the Dalai Lama.

There are three kinds of suffering:

1. Suffering of Suffering
2. Suffering of change
3. All pervasive suffering

(a)attachment to the world [refusal to let go], (b) anger, (c) *IGNORANCE* these are the cause of suffering.

Now if suffering is caused by these factors and its experienced in in three different ways would it be a problem for attaining a meaningful life. Is Suffering a problem for the meaning of life?

Would it be the case that we can aquire meaning and still go through life suffering. Life is what we make it out to be, so can it be said that meaning in life is what we make it out to be no matter if we go through life suffering. Or is it all just pointless.

Well ofcourse you can 'give' meaning to life, like you making your purpose of life to finish poverty, or to go down in the history books etc. But the thing is, even this is a result of attacthment to the world. Therefore, your meaning to life will only be able to give you momentary comfort. 'The' meaning to life, however, is a different thing, which is beyond the logic of the world.

thats it i always said that perhaps 'your' next form wont care whether you were famous or sufferd etc. difefernt attachmet areas..

ignorance is an abundance of knowledge,

too much ignorance is a lack of knowledge

WELL SAID AWAKENINGMYSTIC, ALTHOUGH I DONT THINK ANYONE IS CAPABLE OF EVEN CONCEIVING HOW MUCH THERE IS TO KNOW OR THINK.

hence, they are ignorant... they will always have a lack of knowledge

however, what of the person that knows the knowledge he does not know? can he die?

we will never have too much knowledge. realising that we have knowledge in some areas and no knowledge in other areas is...quite frankly a form of knowledge .
We will always be ignorant to some degree- that is the beauty of life- the ability to keep learning, to answer questions, to gain knowledge, everyday for the rest of your life.

my question was... what of the one being that is ignorant of his ignorance, that knows what is not know, that understands the inconcievable, that makes life from death... the supreme knowledge.

Suffering seems to be a positive force in life.....or atleast I believe it is. Do you disagree or agree? And Why?
