If it's purely psychological then I think the question being posted answers itself. See, "cool" people are only cool because there are "uncool" people... and cool people are only above uncool people if the uncool people envy the cool people. In essence, inquiring about the nature of cool people makes them cooler, because you care what they think and are interested in that, whereas they have absolutely no interest in you or what you think. Seeking to undertstand them is quite similar to idolizing them in this respect, according to me. No matter how much you convince yourself of their bad habits, something is still intriguing about being in their position. It is this superiority, according to me, that places them above you in their minds. They may not be fully aware of it, but they "sense" it, as do you.
