Also, on the other hand the cult of scientologists, is another story. Thats another group that makes things up as they go.

Which is the normal pro quo of cults.

Which is what Catholics do as well, and is part of the reason they would be corrupt.

All of their "traditions" were made up, at one point or another, some from the beggining, some along the way. Just as all of their teachings are through human interpretation, some of which is made into a "churches law" of a specific interpretation as followed by a specific church or sect.

religions may have begun using the same tricks as scientology has, but they no longer do, and therefore the issue is resolved, people now follow them of their own volition.

This isn't quite true.

The main reasons people follow any religion is because of fear and peer pressure. Brain washing by friends and family, threats of blasphemy and disowning to threats of eternal damnation and demons. Its the single largest and sickest and largely unrealized cult recruitment activity that exists (in referrence to all mainstream accepted religions).

It truly is sad and mindless mob mentality, on the more innocent side. The force and threats are far more vile. Censorship is primarily based on religious views, this is more brain washing.

Its a very big social construct picture. And don't expect the masses who claim faith in some religion to point out the misdeads or abuse of recruitment or practices of their church and sect, but you can hear exactly whats wrong with their church in their arguments and slander towards other religions.

Just don't expect them to put it together. Hypocricy is a one way street to people in denial and living lies.

The use of these types of techniques for the recruitment of religious members, although a true statement in a number of religions, does not apply to EVERY religion. Yes, it is known that people in a number of religions throughout history have been forced into jumping onto the bandwagon due to pressure and fear. You have to keep in mind that all religions do NOT function on a basis of "blasphemy" and "eternal damnation". For the few and perhaps most widely-practiced of religions, the use of these techniques has applied in the past and most likely applies today.

Making the assumption that the "main" reason people follow "any" religion is due to these specific factors is a very bold statement, and one I seriously doubt.

Brainwashing is the number one recruitment factor for religion. For it's easier to keep members than to get members to join. Things like fear, acceptance, tradition are all words that keep people stationary. Trying to break the inertia is difficult for once somethings stationary it doesn't want to move.

On a side note who saw the south park on scientology?
