I would say I do about 5 frames on average for any 1 subject. I always try to get it right in camera the first time though, and then play with exposures to get different effects.
Some people are very relaxed with digital because it's digitial - you're not wasting actual film roles, and that often promotes carelessness and the people thinking "oh well I'll just grade it in photoshop".
But I can relate to taking lots of pictures and you feel like only one has come out good and the rest are mediocre. I think every photographer experiences that more often than not.
