I do believe that all religions are essentially one in the same. But what I think happened is that during the journey of spreading the word of God, each person took it how they liked, and told a slightly different story to the next. If you've ever played the game where you need to pass on a message to 10 people and see what the message sounds like, you'll know what I mean. And when people become so convinced of their version of the story, since at this point there are so many, the only one you can believe is your own. And what people instinctually do, it seems, is kill in the absolute belief that their version is the right one. "Killing in the name of God" almost makes me sick to my stomach. Killing as if it is God's will... as if he couldn't do himself... that sounds really selfish on humanity's part. If this is all true, those who have killed with those intentions, will be punished for sure.
"I'm a human being, God Dammit!! My life has value!!!"
