For instance, if you were part of a crew on a ship that is battling another ship, the reason you are 'part' of the battle on the ship you're on is because you experience first hand the direct offense and direct defense of the ship with the rest of your crew.
So by this statement, one is a part of the crew without being party of the other part.
The reason you are not part of the other ship's crew in battle is because you only experience indirect offense and indirect defense it inflicts.
