"The Price of Honor"
The warm sunlight comes streaming down
Above the final resting place
Of the dead soldiers whose renown
Could not be given to them face to face.
They lie there in those hills above the green
The plains where battles fought and won
Were not by the living seen
Until the rise of the morning sun.
What brave youth have fallen there!
Young men in their prime laid low
Boys keen-sighted and aware
With so much time still left to grow.
We will never have our fill
War rages on and always will
But those poor souls who fight the wars
Will return to us no more.

Out of the night the blood is flowing
The rising sun sees thousands mourn
The guns are blasting, bugles blowing
As hearts and flesh are asunder torn.
The young and silly boys of summer
Who in the fields would dance and sing
Now make funeral marches with the drummer
And fly to Death on rotted wings.
One blast more the silence broken
As children fight, they know not why
And as the eulogy is spoken
The pure white clouds show blood-red in the sky.
