OPENING SCENE (20040917)
As the sun emerges
From the shadows of the night,
From the city's dirges
A woman screams in agony and fright
As the world crosses the threshold
From the night into the day
A baby boy enters the world
As his mother fades away
The harsh sun dries his mother's blood
His weak cries fill the alleyways
Tears pour down his sister's cheeks
At her mother's glazed eyes and her brother's dazed face
Weakly, sister shakes her mother
She doesn't wake, and sister shudders
Strongly, then, she hits her brother
Baby's cries turn to screams but she cannot even mutter
Now with a purpose in her mind
From her pocket, draws a knife
Looks up once more at the dull, hazed sky
And quickly then, she takes her life
Her blood spatters on the baby's face
As with her last strength, she lays herself down
Beside her mother and waits to die
With the now-cold body on the grimy ground
"For each time mankind progresses, man himself regresses."
