A user named crystalbreeze has posted detailed information about a guy called Michael Pennington who claims to be ghost in contact with the living.
Many of these posts were made in February 2004 when the story was still running. Since that time it would appear that there are several explanations for this runaway online ghost phenomena. There are a variety of locations on the web where postings appear but check out this one at http://mywebpage.netscape.com/timothywhatever/index.html and which tries to find answers.
If you come across Pennington or his ghosts or crowd of friends just remember it is a bit of harmless fun so dont get believing the whole global mission thing.
