Anarchy... don't you need a rule for that?

Anarchy... don't you need a rule for that? [+ favourites]

This occurred to me many years ago...
You would need a rule to inforce anarchy if you had a system bound by it...
Truth is, we almost live in anarchy now... we can decide the laws together... we just prefer to make the laws we have limiting for what is considered for the greater good...
Religious sentiment is very binding, and by the rules of 'up above' perhaps we'll never truly have anarchy... we won't get away with it...
Even if we could imagine doing anything, something always pulls us back to earth and sets our mind a healthy alternative... what we are 'supposed' to be doing...
My questions, 'does anarchy exist?', 'if so (or if not), how?' and 'what is it that tells us that?'
I can only hope I have not offended anyone here... that was not my aim...

Anarchism is a complete abscense of the state apparatus no arbitrary form of hierarchy and no class distinction. It also would depend on what type of anarchist you are reffering to (anarcho-communists, anarcho-syndicalists, anarcho primitivists etc.)

Anarchism in any form does not exist many anarchists will tell you that in order for anarchy to work revolutionary overthrow of the ruling class has to be a factor. As soon as the revolution has been won all state institutions would be dissolved leaving no ruling class and no government.

No rules mean that anything from rape to muder are perfectly legal.

Maybe...but I'm pretty sure these things still exist don't they...Perhaps people over rate the importance of rules..

the idea behind anarchy is not to simply remove all the rules and watch the chaos begin. the idea is to create a mindset amongst people where the type of rules we have would not be necessary. anarchists want to encourage people to work together instead of compete. whether or not that is possible is obviously debatable.

also most anarchists that i know believe that much if not most of the crime we see is because of the way our society is built, with people forced to compete with one another and the emphasis on material wealth above everything else.

I believe it is possible to work collectively for the good of society besides it has been done before take the Paris Commune for instance.

The definition of anarchy is :
- Absence of any form of political authority.
- Political disorder and confusion.
- Absence of any cohesive principle, such as a common standard or purpose.

How does that fit with this:

It doesnt.


Anarchism is closely related to communism both systems seek the utopian conditions of a stateless classless society. For instance The elimination of poverty,class and increased worker control over the means of production would improve society and eventually make such rules we have in place obselete.

Such as crime for instance if the people are prosperous and not poverty stricken the crime rate would naturally go down. Would we ever get to a point where some or all of the laws regarding crime are obselete is debatable.

At least thats my take on what was said.

I disagree. Poverty is not a cause of crime. Some of the richest men still commit crimes. It may be attributed to some crime, but the root cause of crime is evil in our hearts.

BTW. Have you ever seen a classless society? How does this philosophy conform to reality?

Poverty is a major cause of crime as is the general repressive nature of the capitalist system of governance. I never said poverty was the cause of crime I simply used it as an example in regards to the validity of the quote.

The closest a society has ever come to a classless society was the Paris Commune they attained a socialist system of governance.

I think what PeteSmith is asking is how do you convince the upper class to give up power, wealth and prestige? And also how do you convince the lower classes that they should not try to better themselves?

You dont convince the upper class to give up power you take it from them by revolutionary means. As for wealth heavy taxation of the rich and equal distribution of wealth amongst all the people narrows the class divide.

What convincing of the lower classes is necessary everyone strives for a better life. Abolition of class and wage slavery are in their best interest.
