Life for people in their 20's [+ favourites]

I would like to see "revelations" of life from people in their 20's. I am talking about actual revelations. Moments when you came to a sudden understanding about something (anything) that made you stop in your tracks and stare inwardly in complete wonder at your discovery. Please tell everybody what your age was at the time of your revelation and give a fairly descriptive account of the moment. There is no topic too big or too small.

To start things off, I was 25 when I had the revelation that I could take on any occupation or pasttime that I chose. Everything I saw could be broken down into manageable pieces, and nobody had the authority to tell me that I could not pursue a goal (legal goal). It was a moment when I looked around me and saw a house - I could figure out how to build a house; I saw a car - I could figure out how to fix a car; I saw a computer - I had already learned how to build computers... Everywhere I looked, I knew I could find information, ask questions, earn $ for materials, etc. Nothing was beyond attainment. It seems like such a simple concept on the face of it, but for me, intellectual understanding and true realization were two completely different states of mind.

I'm not 20 yet but I will be next year. I'll just add, tommybc98, it seems you experienced a form of self-actualization. I have experienced a strong form self-actualization regarding individual truth which is something not all encounter.

i became depressed when i turned 20. i sat and thought about my age and it really hit me that i had "used up" 1/4-1/5 of my entire life. thats a big chunk, especially for somebody who hadnt done a lot of things his peers had already been doing for several years... it was a little bit of a wake up for me, needless to say.

yea tommy i know what you sayin.. i remember thinking of the life of an adult "in charge" so to speak.. then reliazed how i can easily take that postion thn made me realize that humans are infeior in a way if i can do those things.. but cycle ups an ddowns.. i mean theres always someone better at you at something else still but.. when you exercise get mucles then in good cardio shape you fel like your on top of the world no matter what anyone does..

Every year I spend makes me think I didn't exist the year before. Every year spawns massive change in my life.

But the battle to redeem one's self worth and accept it is definitely one of the key battles of my 20s.

I was about 18 or 19 when I had a revelation about God. I was thinking what it would be like in heaven. To live forever with God, and accoriding to the bible I would have a crown and I would have a house. And all I would have to do is worship God forever. And there would be joy and happiness forever. The revelation was, that to me this made no sense. I did not really want to live all eternity whorshiping God forever. I could give a shit less about streets of gold and manshions and pure happiness forever. I didn't really want these things. I thought about it, and it never really came to be until I turned 20, but what I really want is to be like God. I want to sit with him and be his equal in all ways.

I am not saying this is a good thing, it's just the biggest realization I have ever had.

i am also not 20 but i have experienced my sudden realization of possibilities this summer. the first time i ever tried shrooms. regardless of what people say about drugs i believe that drugs in moderation are the most beautiful euphoric natural feeling that we can attain and it is my complete belief that the govt. has made them illegal for just that purpose to hide the reality of life.
so in my revelation i was dummed down to absolutely nothing, i could stare at anything and not register a single thought about that object but i knew it existed. however i lost all grip; on depth perception and could not tell where or how things existed but i accepted them. i completel forgot who i was where i was what i was doing and where my life was headed. it was beautiful, the point in my mind where i can momentarily asses everything that is presented to me void of any secualr knowledge without drugs is when i know i have succeeded in life. to use everything you see or encounter for what its worth which is learned through experience is the only pure form of knowledge that we should know.

No actually I don't. In fact most people get absoultley furious when I talk like that. But tell me, what can be greater than Godhood. Nothing. What can bring you more peace, happiness, and most importantley understanding. What holds no greater point. Nothing. Because nothing is really relevant unless you are a God. It is the differnce between animals and man. As if you were a dog stareing at a human and realizeing what you are without. You would definatley not care to be a dog anymore would you.

i would like to introduce my self as someone who shares your desire. i have long thought that deity would be a brilliant thing to have, absolute power and understanding. the power would be of no interest at all, for eons, purely study your own understanding would be enough. right and wrong would not apply, nor time, nor any other mortal consideration. what would be more amazing than that. i cant put words to what i think it would be like, im having enoug trouble putting the thoughts to it. but i understand why people would get annoyed, which is whay ive never mentioned it to anyone. what would you do as a deity?

For people who would criticize your view, Conway and Cynic, it is likely that they are among the many people that feel an inexplicable sense of fear at the idea that something is beyond their grasp or comprehension. For those people, I would propose the following question:
As God observes your desire to be like Him in all ways, do people honestly think God will be offended?
He did not make us to be drones, incapable of rationalization or reason. I think God is not only aware of, but has planned for humans to progress beyond the point of serving God with grovelling and burnt offerings at the alter. In my mind, to desire to be like God must surely epitomize everything of what God would want from us. That being said, like everything else in this world, the balance of power and understanding must always remain stable. It is when power surpasses understanding that people truly have cause to fear "deity-wannabes".

i find the possibility of understanding much more interesting than that of power. though the power would be interesting, have a go at making a universe myself. though i think you would need the memory of your mortal understanding in order to enjoy the new found understanding that deity would bring.

as for those who would dislike our point of view, i think they have another reason, in some ways our desire could well be seen as somewhat blasphemous, as we want to be god, not to be his subjects. we want to be like him, and be his equals, whereas christianity tells us we are not fit to eat the crumbs from under his table, but are invited to dine with him due to his grace. wanting to be a deity, is wanting to be god, and it would be hard to worship and serve someone who is your equal.

Perhaps, Cynic, but what do you suppose the concept of "blasphemy" really means to people? All to often, I see people toss that idea around because they are uncomfortable with someone acting outside the socially acceptable norms. I see them act shocked, as though we were children that had just done something an adult had told everyone not to do. Has this been your experience?

read up on Jainism. ive been a believer in all of us becoming God-like through all our trials for a while now. i think it is more likely that we all become part of some sort of collective as opposed to individual God(like) entities. Jainism is heavily based on hierarchies of individuals at different levels in their spirituality.
