Fahrenheit 9/11: A Conservative Critique

by William Norman Grigg of The New American

I just returned from viewing Fahrenheit 9/11 here in Appleton, WI. I went to the 1:30 PM showing, which was – astonishingly – sold out. The crowd was overwhelmingly white and middle-class (this IS Wisconsin, remember), ranging in age from early teens to retirees. The people were polite, friendly, well-mannered (something we shouldn't take for granted on the part of contemporary theater crowds). There was tumultuous applause at the end, punctuated by a moment of reflective silence as we read the dedication card invoking those murdered by terrorists on 9/11, and those murdered through state terrorism in the aftermath.

(Fahrenheit 9/11) will have a HUGE impact because Moore – his facile leftist economics notwithstanding – has nailed his case against the Bush regime flush to the plank. It will be all but impossible for anybody who sits still and watches this film to view Bush the Lesser as anything other than a petty, spiteful, dim-witted, bloody-handed little fool – and the figurehead of a murderous power elite. This explains why the Bu'ushists are threatening to go Abu Ghraib on Moore: They're busted.

The most powerful moments in the film are those that humanize U.S. troops, several of whom are shown on-screen criticizing the regime. A major arc of the film is devoted to a Flint, Michigan housewife from a military family whose son, just prior to being killed in Iraq, wrote a letter condemning "George 'I wanna be like my Daddy' Bush" for staging this useless, unjust war.

I am so glad to read this review. Michael Moore is the reason my "quote" at the bottome is what it is. He frightens me because I fear his success will keep others complacent, content in the 'fact' that someone is making a ruckuss. It is doubly nice to read this from a reviewer from Appleton WI. I remember Appleton as the city that Bob Hope said he 'wouldn't even fly over'. Ultra-ultra conservative. Having lived in Appleton many years ago, I remember the original opening of 'Gone With the Wind'. Not in 1939 or 1940, but in the late 1966 - first time it was allowed to be shown. People in the audience of the film 'Mash', got up and walked out, so incensed over the language and images. And now this. Maybe there is hope for us yet.

if this movie sways peoples opinions as much as the media is making it sound like it will, then bush really doesnt deserve to be in office again... i mean its a freakin movie. movies belong in the entertainment area, not politics. if people obtain their political views from watching movies then society hasnt come nearly as far as i could have sworn it had...

and as far as Bowling for Columbine goes, there are no lies, there are omissions of truth and skewed perspectives though... just like in all of Moore's films, he is giving his take on what went on.

This movie will have very little impact. Let's be serious. Kerry will get his loyal 45% and Bush will get his loyal 45%. They are spending the billions on the remaining 10% who really don't care and are out having a beer at a baseball game instead of seeing Michael Moores movie. Two weeks before the election they will start paying attention on what is going on. Two things can decide the election, another attact on our soil and finding Bin Ladin.

exactly, unless one of those things happens, the election will still be a close one, regardless of some silly movie.

Haven't seen it yet , in fact I never heard of it untill I was on the phone with a friend who told me about it. Next time I am there, maybe we will go see it, as he would like to and I thought it sounded interesting. But from his opinion of it, I would say it doesn't say anything more than what I know is the truth about the glorious despot, pres.bush.
First he says the CIA told him the truth, now he says they lie.
As with most of the american government, who is the bigger liar? NO INTEGERITY in government!

I'm happy the movie was released and I'm looking forwarding to seeing this movie.

I'm also looking forward to seeing "Michael Moore Hates America" when it's released.

I saw it - it made me angrier then I already have been. I kept an open mind, because I too have learned that some Moor's facts were opinions stretched. As a matter of fact one man walked out when Moore started to talk about how nice it was in Iraq before we came. He was right, but strected it some, I think it pissed someone off and he walked out. But it is based on truth and I learned some things. I discovered that I was wrong for supporting Desert Storm. I had a lot of respect for Bush Sr, but I too was fooled.

The Bush family is stuck right up the ass of the Sada's and Mr. Moore well documented it and I've read reviews from Republicans who watched it and have turned coat against Bush. However - it will anger some who will refuse to believe it and they in return will make trouble.

I delve a little bit into new age religion, and it has been predicted that our country will undergo a great deal of tourmoil over this election. Mr. Moor's movie will turn many twords the cause as well as turn many against it. But I suggest, if you haven't seen it. See it. You'll learn some things, exagerated maybe, but educational, yes.

I will never see this movie because I would not want to put one penny in that socialist's pocket. This movie will have very little effect on the election. Those who see it, for the most part, have already made up their minds. It is sad that a party has to have bad things happen in order to win an election (Bin Ladin not being captured, solders killed, economy sliding). Moore is right, Iraq was a peaceful little country with kids flying kites. It was just a big rumor that he used WMD, boiled prisoners in oil, threw dissadents into woodchippers feet first so they would die slow, go to prisons when he was bored so he could shoot prisoners, pull women off the street to rape them. Sure would be a lot better with him back in power. The movie was just a big hatchet job and anyone who believes all that is in it needs to read some more.

1) What does Bin Laden have to do with the war in Iraq?
2) When you make war, people die
3) Failing economy is due to oil in Iraq?
I fail to see some of the connections you are implying.

1) The war is on terrorism. Not a war on Bin Ladin. Iraq was a terrorist state and Bin Ladin is a terrorist. Get the connection?
2)People do die when there is a war. But, in Iraq's situation, fewer are now dying. Saddam killed an average of 300 innocent women, children and men a day. At least now, the majority that are dying are murderers.
3) You made a leap on the Iraqi oil. The statement was generic in that the democrats would get more votes no matter what the cause if the economy slides.
Hope the connection is clear

Oh the connect is quite clear only different from the one you make.

IUHoosier, you have displayed your closed-mindedness matched with assumption, and fear of awareness by stating facts about a movie you have not seen.

Based on your statements I am almost certain you shy away from pro-moore reviews and stick with very conservative ones, which would fill your mind with even more assumptions.

To quote a white house rep:
