Amazing: The Coelacanth
Coelacanth are one of the oldest known relatives of Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish and tetrapods).

They were believed to have gone extinct in the late Cretaceous (approximately 100 million years ago) and basically co-existed with dinosaurs during this era.

These huge fish could reach up to six feet and weigh over a hundred pounds. Fossils were found and this animal was treated much like other dinosaurs, as an extinct species.

In 1938 a living Coelacanth was discovered off the coast of Madagascar and since then it has gone from being something they only knew about through fossils to something they can actually feel see and touch.

The current species in its form is believed to have evolved approximately 400 million years ago - this means the fish in its current form is the same one that existed 400 million years ago.

It makes it interesting to consider what other ancient animals still exist in the oceans that we believe to have gone extinct millions of years ago but still exists somewhere hidden on the planet. This animal evolved right at the start of the dinosaur age and still exists now.
