Honestly, i don't know that love can be defined. I've been taught that a good definition must consist of more than just examples and cannot contain the same word you're defining. I don't think there is any way to define love without doing these things. In the most generic of views it is the idea that you can feel so close to someone, and feel that they are so significant, that they are more valuable to you than you are.
In addition, I'm afraid that there are many kinds of love and there is no one definition that will encompass all of them. I don't think you can be told what love is, but certainly when you feel it, you know. Or so I think.
As far as how you know you're in love, that all depends on personal interpretation. People say that they know because they can't stop thinking about the person and when they do think about the person they can't stop smiling. They are the person you think of off the bat when you hear a love song, and they are the person you're thinking of as your falling asleep, and supposedly the person in your dreams.
I can't personally vouch for any of this because I don't know that there has ever been any one person that all of that applied to, but that's the best I've got for you.
