Although quite promising based on the presence of De Niro in a fantasy/sci-fi movie, it also has Michelle Pfeiffer who lost her way a long time ago. Since her head is bigger than his on most of the posters I was afraid she would have a more relevant part in the movie, and I was right. She wasn't horrible, mind you... but the good scenes with her in them were really not because of her but the music and special effects. The special effects were good. The overall movie started somewhat promising with lots of fantastical ideas in a whole new world, but the movie didn't carry with it enough seriousness overall and by the end the useless cliche'd drama did indeed make me scratch my forehead. One thing I will say, however - the musical score for the first half of the movie is pretty damn good. Important to note that the original book that this movie was based on was actually much more serious and written with sex and was for adults - they obviously changed this movie quite a bit to ensure a successful box office. 3/5
