Uber Newb [+ favourites]

It seems no matter how many years Ive spent on the internet, Im still a total newb to it.

I really dont understand half the sites I go to, or half the things my computer can do. Yes folks, Im a techno-bimbo.

And I have alot of questions about this site still.

Im also sure there are alot of people who DO know stuff about computers, but are still total newbs to the site itself, finding their feet and wanting to know how to navigate it better. (Like the person the other day who asked how do you tell if someone is online or not.)

So I thought it might be an idea to start this thread, which from now on I will come to and post any questions I have about the site as they arise.

And I will take advantage of the cool option to add it to my "favourites" so if I ever need some help, I can just click it and come here first. As there may be an answer here before I start a new thread- which will get lost over the years and some one else will end up making yet another thread asking the very same question by then.

So add this to your favourites option and come here before you begin a new thread asking a technical question.

Oh, and I have already prepared to be embarrassed should this type of thread already exist. But from what Ive seen, the technical help tends to be one thread for one question, which takes a long time to sift through to see if your question has been asked and answered.

Now, onto the questions...

First up, I was wondering if there is any way to tell if someone has received a personal message you have sent them? Ive sent a couple to people in the past few days and received no reply.

It could well be they are busy and that's fine. But Id hate them to think Im ignoring them, or never receive the message; which sort of leaves a missing piece in the tapesty of relationships we build on this site.

And I don't want to be posting and pestering them to see if they have actually received anything from me. (Which I will have to do now. )

I was also wondering if there are some forum areas which do not allow you to upload images etc if you begin a thread on them?

It seems that looking at some of the various areas, if i create a new thread in one I have the option to upload things, where on other areas I cannot.

Is this correct?

Because I have been meaning to add a visual theme to my Chained Wings thread ever since I began, but never found the option to upload anything.

Does this mean by creating my thread in the prose section of the site, I have made it impossible to add pictures?

And is there any way to fix this?

The PM (personal message) system works perfectly as far as I know. Sometimes people don't notice their inbox blinking or overlook messages if they receive a lot of them.

Certain sections allow you to do different things. Some allow video uploads, some allow pic uploads and some now allow voice uploads. Some sections - like this one - only allow typed posts.

If you want to add pictures you must start a thread in a section that allows you to upload pictures. If you make a mistake you can ask any admin to move or delete a thread.


It would be a good idea to highlight or somehow indicate which sections do what, but for now here is an outline as it stands at this moment:
