That may be the source of the word. But I think more interesting is a modern philosophical definition that doesn't subscribe to societal morality (which can't be relied on for anything anyways).

A modern philosophical definition isn't needed though. Evil is an archaic word which has no relevance in today's society. It has magical and supernatural connotations, it insinuates that something is bad in and of itself and ignores any possibilities for motives that I'm sure anyone will agree exist.

Misguided motives don't make someone evil, they make them unintelligent.

Rather than the descriptor for a person, evil should describe an action that is counter-productive to goodness.

And certainly there are actions that are counter-productive to goodness. And I define them as actions that promote disinformation.

Therefore, certainly evil has old stupid definitions and applications, but a word should still be used to describe actions that are purely counter-productive.

Corruption, for example, is evil to me. It is disinformation and counter-productive for humans as a species.

Disinformation is disinformation. Counter-production is counter-production. Why put them under the headline evil? That is an unneeded label.

Truth is neither good nor evil so why say that it's either? Corruption could be used in ways defined as good by your terms I'm sure. Let's say for instance you try to corrupt someone to test their character, wouldn't that be good in your book?

Good and evil don't exist, they're just guidelines passed down to us from our ancestors because of what they tend to produce. Murder tends to produce bad things and so it was called evil.

We should look at things for what they are and not bombard them with unnecessary labels. My name is Chris. I have the potential to produce both good and evil. I have produced both good and evil. What am I? Good or evil? Well... I'm neither. I'm just Chris, a conglomeration of cells capable of making choices, thinking thoughts and questioning things, that's it.

I believe good and evil get in the way of whats truly important.

Unity.

i find the human species gives both god and the devil their powers. We choose sides. We are the plain in which opposites coexist.

We have a buffet of infinite ideas. Infinite pursuits. The only limits we have are on the very things that would ultimately limit us.

well assuming that the universal idea of "Good" is what it is, "Evil" is merely the antithesis.

For every positive or good action, there is in some form, to some degree, an evil opposite.

Yes this is all very interesting. But what is your own definitions of evil. To me evil is any act that's consequences leave you cold to the core. Something you just cannot believe someone would do. Like locking a child in a basement for fifteen years, or systematically murdering people just because they can get away with it, or I don't know whatever crimes you can think of that leave you feeling numb inside. Isn't that evil. And what about people who just seem to have no kind of feelings of empathy or sympathy for another person and who do not care what they do to hurt another physically or emotionally. If they have no idea about cause and effect of their actions on the world aqnd blindly stumble around with no moral crutch at all, isn't that evil? Yes I know its ignorance and stupidity and all the rest of it, but to me their actions are what constitute real evil in the world.

evil comes from boredom. when your mind is empty, its a vessel for evil to climb into. we are not naturally born with nothing to do, so evil is not a natural thing. as for what is concidered evil, that to me is totally opinion.

I define good and evil as anything that helps or hinders me in my pursuit of self-realization.
Objective, civilization-based consequences have no real bearing on matters affecting moral judgements of good and evil.

In Khaled Hosseini's book "The Kite Runner", the main character's father defines all sin and all evil by one simple comandment. DO NOT STEAL! Taking their property is stealing, taking their life is stealing, you steal their right to know the truth by lying. And so on. Everything that anyone would consider evil can be summed up in this one simple rule. Just a thought, and also an amazing book.
