Actually I think it comes from color printing in general as they are basic to photography since the advent of color photography.
RBG is used in printing a slide (positive) while the secondary colors cyan, magenta & yellow are used in printing from a negative (a b&w negative records black & white & shades of grey; a white hat is black in the negative & a black dress would be white (litghter) The color palette for painting has more primary & secondary colors.
