Three reasons I hate Orcas (Killer Whales) [+ favourites]

1. They kidnap baby seals, take them into the deep ocean and fuck with them by tossing them into the air until they eventually die.

2. When they can't catch small fish by outrunning them they use their tails to beat them into submission, then eat them.

3. They are too small to eat big whales... So they chase them, tire them out, then take turns jumping on them so they drown.

The term is anthropomorphizing aka the pathetic fallacy.

Why not just shrug and mutter something about nature and survival?

The fact that orcas have 4 times the size of brains that we do and have extremely social and non instinctive behaviour patterns makes "anthropomorphizing" a rather incorrect categorization, since that more readily applies to innanimate objects and therefore creatures that could less possibly than not, behave as we do.

Orcas, as I have described, do not adequately fall into that category, and nor does their highly developed behaviour which often has little to do with survival.

Nice try though. That's a big word. I had to look it up.

Whilst I don't agree with how Atollia presented the argument here- using big words- she has a point. And I think that the reason whales don't have social morals is simple enough fact that they are not as evolved as us-generally.

That said, there's no real need to analyse this; everyone has there own attitude and is entitled to express it- this is- after all what makes us fun human beings. So yeah, these whales suck-lets go teach em some lessons

4 times the size of our brain... that doesn't mean they're smarter than us or even close. The deciding factor in intelligence is brain mass proportional to body mass so yah... they have 4 times the size of our brain but 20 times our weight.

Quasi intellectual dolts. All you do is try to impose an opinion based on the need to contradict fueled by no internal logical contradiction but the desire to impose one. You people sicken me. I could get into a debate about Orcas and their social behaviour parallelling humans, but since not one of you tards posted anything in opposition of this idea, there's no need.

And now, after research, one of you dolts will... and even though your possibility is possible, it will be unlikely. Yet, you will find five points that are plausible, attach them in an unplausible way to make a conclusion that is possible, but unlikely.

But in the end, Orcas still seem to be big spoiled jerks. Kind of like Lions.

It's difficult for land creatures(humans) to have compassion for sea creatures(victims of orcas). They live in a different world than us essentially. If we were able to assert dominance over sea life and micromanage it then perhaps we would be interested in policing the behavior of orcas for the sake of helping other sea animals. Humans are detached from sea life so much so that if everything died in the ocean we would probably only be a little bit sad about not being able to eat any more of it and mostly concerned with how it would affect our ability to survive.

Orcas are assholes but nobody cares.

Also orcas, like lions, pose almost no threat to the human race. We are far too concerned with policing ourselves to care about outside species which interact with us on a negligible level.

Well, I don't think we should do anything about it. It's egotistical to believe we, who do nothing but fuck everything up, can somehow dictate terms to another species. Especially since somehow the ecosystem is dependant on Orcas to do what they do.

But being at the top of the food chain for such a long time has really provided Orcas with the freedom to develop lots of anti-social characteristics that seem to have nothing to do with their need to survive.

Humans were put on this earth; so were lions so were orcas. Blame who you want-either way a vaild argument could be put forward but, well, in my opinion this should be done for fun in the case of the latter.

As you've implied Decius, If you killed the lions there'd be something else at the top of the food chain. And if you killed the ocras there'd be something also. Thats how it works; its fortunate; perhaps even a bi-product of our being; that we have morals. And it would seem to me the best example of this would be to have compassion over and above the attempt at ridicule?

But sticking to morals to much is absurd and actually fruitless; in exactly the same sense that posting a post about hating something is, Decius; somethings aren't meant to be taken so seriously. If you ask the question why do ocras do the things they do then I'd say its probably because they aren't hunted and so they're bored so they do these things which we call evil to sustain the happiness. That would explain a lot to me looking at the way a lot of people behave.

but theres no real need for this; Lets lighten up a bit.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking it seriously... although I'm not, and I'm not sure why you're posting a lengthy theological critique on how we should view nature.

Did you know that lions kill gorgeous leopards simply because they know that leopards pose a competition for food?

The female lions actually hunt leopards for that sole purpose.

I saw a "Nature" episode, which was shown on PBS, on that, It was awesome!

Orcas are like humans. They have no natural enemies, besides each other. And many times they kill for sport. There are various animals, at least most mammals that I know of, that kill for no reason other than to kill; whether it is for fun or to send a message to other animals, letting them know trespassing is not tolerated. Chimps are one of those mammals that kill for the sake of killing. This has nothing to do with intelligence, it is just a messed up characteristic that certain mammals have. We cannot exclude ourselves from the list of mammals that think they are invincible, because in this disturbing list humans seem to be at the top of the list.

Bacteria are the only true enemies of the living…sneaky little bastards always adapting...DIE DIE DIE....

Most chimps that kill that I've seen or read about do it specifically for dominance. I've never heard of chimps killing other species for fun. In fact I think most mammals DON'T do that.

Actually, I saw a documentary (again on PBS) on Chimps and Bonobos that show this specific characteristic in a group of chimps. It was quite fascinating.
