Wii Review [+ favourites]

I'm going to go through the main cons right now:

  • As opposed to what was publicly documented, the Wii does not really "support" wired lan ethernet connections. It has USB ports that you can use to connect a lan connection to... but you need to buy a $25 proprietary nintendo adapter that converts RJ45 to USB. Since wireless routers can sometimes be found for $35 is seems that the wired portion is not available.

This is my biggest beef with Nintendo... not necessarily because of the gimmick of charging people for a far superior, far more stable, and far faster connection... but not including a simple RJ45 ethernet port on the Wii itself. This is a sign of bad design, and pisses me off quite badly.

  • The Wii supports widescreen. Yet, when you run gamecube games through the Wii, it does not resize it to match the default 4:3 aspect ratio of the gamecube. Hence, you have to manually go in and change it on your video screen or the Wii itself.... this is also a simple thing that is a sign of bad design. Although I'm not certain, I think the virtual console games have the same problem. This can, however, be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

  • The Wii has screen burn protection so when its innactive for a period it darkens the screen. Good! Now the problem is, the dumb machine does not enable it for VC or Gamecube games. So if you get used to leaving it on while you go take a shit, and do it on a gamecube game, you're not covered. Another sign of simply bad design. This can, however, be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

  • The Wii Sports games are not very impressive. They seem to have been made specifically to utilize the remote and get people interested. As sports games, however, they are not very engaging and quite simplistic.

  • There doesn't seem to be a way to exit the gamecube mode and resume Wii mode. You have to manually turn the machine off and on.

  • I have a projector so trying to set up the sensor bar is sort of a pain in the ass and I ahvent quite figured it out perfectly yet.

  • They don't specify whether the Wireless lan is G or N or B in the manual.

    ---

Now to the specific pros that haven't already been hyped....

  • It works flawlessly in gamecube mode.

  • The ability to use 4 gamecube controllers with it as well as gamecube memory cartridges is very cool.

  • Although I haven't tested it (because I don't have a fucking wireless internet conection) the VR games are supposed to be playable with the gamecube controllers, which is awesome.

  • The wireless lan card they have built into the Wii seems to be very good at trolling for other networks.

    ----

That's all I have thus far. The lack of the RJ45 port is the biggest concern and I was busily flaming Nintendo after I found out you have to buy a $25 adapter for a wired connection. I despise wireless connections and now have to actually go out and buy a fucking router to work with this shitbox, or troll looking for another wireless network.

The backwards compatibility of this system is what I am happiest about... it is nearly flawless in that regard and its good to have one machine that can, in essence, do it all.

I have not played them but I'm not going to buy any games that are cross console... I figure they will not use the Wii remote as well as possible and will focus on games that are made specifically for the Wii. Red Steel is one of those, but I don't know if I will get it.

I have not bought any other games as I'm not interested in any of them right now. I may buy Zelda sometime though. Not too interested right now.

Its important to note that the graphics and sound are pretty much just as crappy as they were on the Gamecube.

    Hummm

for someone who likes older games so much im suprised that graphics on the gamecube bothered you. Sure, you had the 1st wave games that didn't look to good, but others like resident evil 4 looked amazing to me.

Gamecube graphics were defently barable at the least, but then again, graphics don't mean shit to me.

I liked old games because they were good, not because they had crappy graphics.

Well, here's a helpful email from the homos at Nintendo:

    quote:
Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

First, although the Wii Console does not have an RJ-45 port, it has two USB ports either of which can be used with the Wii LAN Adapter, due to be released in early-January. So far, no official name for the accessory has been announced, nor has the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price been announced, so I'm not sure what you were referring to. Please note that non-Nintendo Wii LAN Adapters are not compatible with the system.

    Really you fucking idiot?

Now, it is true that the Screen Burn-In feature does not work with Nintendo GameCube games, Virtual Console titles, and certain other Wii Channels.

And it is also true that you have to manually adjust the aspect ratio when playing some games.

Exiting Nintendo GameCube game play to the Wii Main Menu requires resetting the system or turning it on and off. Remember that, even with Wii games, you have to press the Home button to access the menu during gameplay. Of course, there is no Home button any Nintendo GameCube Controller.

Super... so you do acknowledge all these problems. You can read. Those Nintendo tech support interviews must be tough.

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to send us your comments and suggestions! Since we take our fans' feedback very seriously, you can be sure that yours will be forwarded to the appropriate departments for review.

    Sincerely,

    Nintendo of America Inc.

Michel, you are a homo, and you're unhappy with your life. I can tell. And its presumptious to think I would be your fan, you manual toting monkey.

PS: I could not send this to Michel because there is no reply email address in the email! Don't you love tech support like that?

When you're this good, it becomes redundant. But I can see how you would be excited, given your age.
