I've been silent on this movie because I was fairly disappointed. To remark on a couple of comments here, Superman as Jesus, well, for those not aware, jews created him and put the word god in his name, Jor- EL and Kal- EL , EL meaning god in hebrew, and the last begotten son and all that. So he kind of already was, and yes, Singer is a Jew, relevant?, couldn't tell ya. Homage? Came closer to plagiarism. For 25 years I've been watching the same goddam set of movies where Superman defeats Lex Luthor, with a spat of an almost undermined yet iconic Zod and a definitely undermined Nuclear Man or whatever. Point being, something new shouldn't be too much to ask for, but what do we get? Not only not something new, but a worse version of something old. The blame of this movies failures lies in almost all of the major components making up the creative team behind it. The major redeeming factor is that while so many points ultimately failed, they were often at least close to being something special. The Music. They fucked up the theme song in their recut version of it, not including the opening pure version of course. Angelic music can be done right, but they just missed that accomplishment and managed to make it feel innappropriate and a little wrong. Imagery, while one of the stronger points, this movie was very limited in venues or sets, creating a constricted feeling of claustrophobia and repetitiveness. But props to the Plane catch and New Krypton lift scene, beautiful. Acting, ok, let's face it, Jimmy was the best actor. Then a tie between Routh (after the farm) and Marsden and almost Posey who just beats out Bosworth, and oh my god am I dissappointed with Spacey. Though a huge factor for this acting mess comes from a later point, writing. Action, you could argue that there were but 1 1/2 to 3 worthwhile scenes. Plane, minigun, quake, and new Krypton lift, with a nod to the ever so brief ship lift. And I think Kevin Smith covered the rest adequately enough. Writing, you may forgive them for the pressure they faced, but still, unfortunately, they must be shot. There was a lack of originality in unfortunately key areas, but points for taking a chance and actually bringing some new directions in terms of the kid, but unfortunately in a very delicate, unstable, and in some ways mishandled fashion. The plot is mentally unchallenging and forgettable, characters are horribly shallow and one dimensional, their only depth and diversity stemming from unflattering duplistic natures and their boringly human "challenges". See, human issues are boring for a Superman movie unless its interfering with his saving the world, thats not how this was set up. Pacing was often an issue particularly in the dragging out of somewhat boring scenes. Superman, appearance, excellent Clark Kent, not quite Superman. Too narrow and thin, hair usually looked weird on Superman, he didn't really appear powerful without a prop. The writing created Superman that leaves pregnant chicks without even saying goodbye, then comes and spies on her like a freakin peeping tom, he can apparently not only hear in space, but pick out sounds, he has no need to go peeping in the dark behind the bushes. He rubs in the creepiness by flying lois by her house without her bothering to mention where that might be, a little "I know where you live, I'll be watching you" action. The man of steel and morals is in a desperate love triangle, knocking up chicks and bailing, is a peeping tom, and is such a pussy HE needs to be saved TWICE! They made him nice and mighty, no doubt, but they made him just a little too fragile. Decent movie, with a couple of really good moments, just some serious enough flaws to keep it from being great. It went the way of Hulk, even used some of its music. Hopefully both sequals will rectify these errors. 7/10
