Un-caring me. [+ favourites]

I find myself not caring about the world unless it is directly related to my life.

I couldnt really care less about twhat is happening in afgannystan, or iraq or anywhere for that matter.

I see the commercials for the starving in ....where ever it is and I just dont care.

I hear things like accidents and murders locally in my area.....and I dont care. I hear stories of something affecting friends of sombody I know and I dont even to care to listen.

Made me started thinking of why I am like that. Was I raised like that? Was it the hours and hours of mindless video games that de-sensitized me? is the world so fucked up that I have heard about it enough and that de-sensitized me?

I really cant figure it out to wy I am like that. Is anyone else feel like I do or am I the only fucked up one here?

I'm pretty sure you just described about 95% of the world's population. I think most people are guided by self interest. We don't care about anything unless it directly relates to us. I don't know how to change it, but I can assure you that you are far from alone in feeling that way.

I started this thread because I am a self-aware indvidual and and I examine all of my actions from a distance.

Observed myself doing that and thought....you asshole.

I don't really see it as a bad thing just an honest thing. Most people that care just pity the other person and leave it at that. They usually don't do anything about it. They love reading about it in the papers and talking about it to their friends at a coffee break. In all honesty I don't think they care either. I think they just deny the truth because their afraid of the judgement someone will pass upon them if they actually say they don't care. Their afraid someone will call them a horribal human being.

It's not so much that I don't care I just have trouble relating to people going through real problems. I've always had food and shelter. I've never been to war how am I supposed to know what it's like? It's like someone is trying to talk to me about quantum physics and I stare at them blankly because I have never read or studied quantum physics.

i think that self intrest is perhaps the strongest instinct an individual posesses. surely it developed first over the course of the evloution of life. social intrest, it would seem, also developed out of the individual's necessity for survival. prehistoric hominids developed societies for protection, saftey, innitially. it was probably only much later that human social dispositions like compassion and empathy developed, and probably as little more than a byproduct of centuries of such close interaction, and certianly only for thoes individuals they were immediately aware of, close to.
so in my pedestrian opinion, what you are feeling (or not feeling as the case may be), is a far more natural reaction to the situations you listed than that of the many who fein intrest (even to the point where they themselves are unaware of the deception) because it is social good form.

self interest is a thing that exists from birth, as a baby the first thing you learn, is that you are the centre of the universe, and all you have to do is cry to have your slightest whim fulfiled. it takes a long time to realise that this isnt true, and depending on how much of a pushover the parent is, you may never realise it. you see kids around who rule over their parents, because the parent is too weak minded to stand up to their child and say no, the child then learns that all they have to do is whine for long enough to get what they want.

self interest of the type you are talking about is linked to this, you dont think that you need to do anything for people, you just think they are their as a sideline.

Caring for people on tv is hard, you see these appeals, and think why? whatever i do im not going to solve this problem. even if everyone in the country gave the money it would solve the problem. so why bother, for a lot of them its starve to death now or live hungry for a few mor years, then die of starvation. thats the ultimate cynical view, giving the money is a short term solution, but no-one does anyhting on the long term.

as for the rest of it, yes the world does suck so much that you have become desensitised. if people werent, then we couldn't police, because the would all be to depressed an upset to do anything, and we would all be emotional wrecks permanentley. we are designed to care about the survival of our species, and the loss of individuals close or important to us. if a few die here and there no-one gets too upset, because they cant.

yeah gods i sound like an asshole

Try helping those around you (neighbors, family friends etc.) Then you won't feel like you can't do anything for people who are in need because we've got problems here too.
