Captain Cynic Advertising Project [+ favourites]

In this thread we will discuss the different methods of advertising used to sponsor and sustain Captain Cynic. As a group we will attempt to analyze and maximize the results of the ads displayed on Captain Cynic. This is a psychological project that will be ongoing.

Note that some information will not be available as the contract with specific advertisers prevents me from disclosing that information.

Below I will outline the current ads used:

  • Google Keywords: These ads mostly show up at the bottom of thread, quote, and poll pages. They are single keywords. Revenue is not generated by these ads. Once you click on them you are taken to another page with a few links. These are advertiser links and revenue is generated from them. The text links at the bottom in essence work as a "google search" but only through their advertisers.

  • Google Ads: These are paid advertiser ads. These show up on thread pages and perhaps elsewhere.

All Google ads use the search engine to index the text content on each page to determine the relevent keywords or ads that should show up.

Currently, I have implemented the ads as follows:

Google Keywords show up at the bottom of most lists throughout the site. This is because users are more likely to click on a relevent keyword at the end of a specified list than at the beginning. The color and placement is in place to make it look well blended with the site, but not entirely the same as the list items.

Google Ads show up throughout the thread pages. I have put them to show up randomly once every seven ads. That means that there is a 14.3% chance that an ad will show up given each post. I have also put a rule so that it never shows up at the end or the beginning of any thread. This is to prevent users from becoming too used to the place the ad shows up so that they are sub-consciously more likely to read the ad but still not find it overly intrusive.

I will use an internal ratio to keep track of our progress. This means that whatever the average click thru number was per day for the last 3 months will be considered a value of '1'.

So every day we will have a ratio to work with: (number of clicks today)/1, where 1 is the average number for the last three months.

For example, yesterday (March 22, 2006) has a CCADD percentage of 74%. That means that yesterday we received approximately 26% less clicks than we did on average for the last three months.

Since the launch of the new site, we have received an average CCADD percentage of 77%.

Please do not click on ads or keyword arbitrarily as that will alter the effectiveness of our efforts.

The thread is now open for discussion on how to make the site more effective as a revenue generator.

so you want us to click on any ad that interests us? and then we'll find out which ones are the most effective.

No... the purpose is not to click on ads. The purpose is to determine where the ads should be placed, what ads should be placed there and at what frequency to maximize click thrus. See, CC gets about 10 thousand users a day. Most of the people who visit the site read posts and don't contribute. They are the majority of the people who click on ads and so we have to cater to them.
