Ask the question, know the answer [+ favourites]

I'm not sure why people do this. They ask a question they know the answer to. For instance in school people that will raise their hand and ask what is h2o and then before the teacher will answer they say it. Or they try and play stupid and pretend they didn't know. I found this particularly frustrating in high school but recently such things have caused me a headache again. But anyways why do you think people do this?

Some people just want to be reassured that what they believe is correct. Humans fear that their beliefs are false.

Ok but psychologically why do people do it? It's just like they need that little bit of praise to boost their self-esteem.

the more ignorant you are, the more popular you are.... think about it

Popularity is a lifestyle. There are two ways to gain it through money and through social behaviour. Is that ignorance? Perhaps but you would have to look at each case individually.

That's just people hiding who they are. The quest for social acceptance.

But does anyone really know the answer to this? Like a real scientific answer.

There are lots of reasons why people do this. For example:

1. You want to find out whether someone is lying.
2. You want to find out whether someone really knows what he's talking about.
3. You want to force the other person to think.
4. You want to get the other person to admit what his real motives are.

These are just a few examples off the top of my head. There are many others.

yes sometimes people do it for those reasons. But I'm talking about people doing it for praise or attention.

In that case, perhaps you could give an example. Actual dialogue, that is. So we'd know what you mean. Thanks.

Asking what is H2O and then answering is weird. Why ask in the first place if you're going to answer anyway? I can't explain this one.

Heh, I don't really think there's a scientific reason for this occurence. But I can say that I've asked someone a question before and in the process of asking I remembered the answer. I think that sometimes I'm not really focusing on the question I'm about to ask, so then when I ask, I do think about it, and the answer suddenly comes to me. It's usually something I already know. With me?
