Hey decious and the other administrators. How about that members are sloted in different categories, from say newbie to veteran etc? Lot's of other forums have this system.

What's the benefit of making certain people higher than others?

well, to see who r active participants. U may have 500 posts, but that cud have come in a few dayz, not necessarily meaning uv'e been here a long time, or u may post once every 5 months. For all we know you could have joined yesterday.

ranking systems serve no purpose other than to boost ego. you can see when a person joined if you just click on their avatar and look at their info... and you can see who the most active members are by looking at the "top posters" section.

*now you can see the number of months a person has been a member next to their post number

the only benefit to a ranking system, is the ones where you are given a title according to the posts number, then after a certain post count you get given the ability to create a custom title. its just another small amsuement.

ranking is just silly. if you have a post count rank system it would just promote more stupid posts that admins will ultimately delete anyway. the only reason admins have an extra title is so people/noobs know who to go to for questions/help.

i think he ment to rank the intelligence of their post and give them a title that acuurately fits their personality.

ex. an openminded poster would get the title of openminded.
a troll would get the title of troll

and that would be kinda cool, if this were a video game. its not about whos smarter here, its about learning.

Enlisting a post number ranking system, if that is what you mean, I feel is a bad idea. Then you will start to see more people posting just to be posting because it is human nature to want to be "number one."

I agree with awakenedwraith in that this is about learning, not who is smarter, therefore, a ranking system based on intelligence would also prove nothing.

I can think of a good example. People used to play Halo : Combat Evolved on Xbox Connect tunneling software, with no ranking system. With the release of Halo 2, and the enlistment of a ranking system, it's nearly impossible to play 5 games without getting cheated. Unintelligent people want to be number one, even if they have not earned it justfully. Therefore, you will see more and more people just respond to a post by saying "lol." Then the post ranking system has been skewed and it has proven nothing.

i didnt mean ranking the inteligence of their post, but that could be quite amusing. i do like the titles system, but having actually thought about it for a bit longer, do agree that it wouldnt really work here. its okay on games forums etc, but this is a bit more serious than most games forums.

I agree with most of the drawbacks but one thing i think should be allowed is more post for more active people (who actually post relevant items) The posting limit is good and i dont think a ranking system would be good due the the above stated reasons from the others but some people should have slightly better privileges. Im not saying like unlimited or anything but for some it isnt enough maybe instead of ten add an extra five or something. I havent been on long but ive noticed this with some of the people ive been talking to.

I did a lot of thinking when I added the post limit feature. This is because I really loathe the possibility of members having to decide which threads to reply to because they are bartering their posts based on importance.

But on the other hand, I definitely think that people should naturally value what they say, and that every interraction should matter on this site.

Of course there is useless banter that is necessary in life, but I think it is good if people don't get used to venting that necessity here. Although i wanted CC to be a friendly place, I did not want it to be an informal hang out where people hang out for the people rather than the thoughts.

I realize that sounds harsh, but the problem with people visitng the site for people is that loyalties are born, cliques are born, and all those interractions blurr the sharing of information. It doesn't hurt to visit the site for the information people share, and even like people for the information they share, but that should never interfere with dissagreement.

It's a thin line to walk. Of course I like and am fond of certain people on here, but I realize as i type that that those reasons exist because of the information and mentalities of those people, not because I require their friendships.

I would love to make a ranking system showing people as illogical or logical (so as to be ignored or taken seriiously) but such things will pigeonhole people that may be on the verge of awakening, and it would also prevent people from learning how to judge people correctly themselves.

This is why the post limit is the best answer I could come up with. It's a transparent method of forcing people who don't value their words on here to value them more.... to think them out more. It doesn't embarass them nor does it limit their interractions with people or the impression they make (since that limit is not imposed on your mailbox).

People will always complain as they learn new things, because we're in a day and age of useless rebellion rather than humility.... which is justified because our leaders are not trustworthy.

But I feel that in the case of CC, since I have nothing to gain or lose except my own ideals, my imposition of rules here do not need to be rebelled against.

That is, of course, also since I will always listen to logical criticism and alter the site based on what the most correct information determines.

the point is, its working. there are way more pm's now then there used to be, and the only thing that really annoyes me is when i post poetry or something, or i choose to post in one of the more fun threads, i trade of a poteintal good conversation in a real thread later on that day. but then again, its just a forum.
