Buddhism is a philosophy. The term 'philosophy' refers to the love of wisdom or love and wisdom, both meanings describe Buddhism perfectly. Buddhism teaches that we should try to develop our intellectual capacity to the fullest so that we can understand clearly. The philosophy includes the Four Noble Truths, Dependant Origination, The Eightfold Path, The Three Characteristics of Existence, The Three Jewels and the Five Precepts, Karma and Intention, Rebirth and Nirvana. Meditation is a practice in Buddhism that is accomplished as a result of studying its philosophy.

I feel that the best answer I could give in a 'koan' sense is, "I don't know".

I've found that most questions like this usually lead you to the realisation that we truly know nothing.

'I don't know' is a very good answer.

The intellect feeds the ego. To attain salvation, we have to let go of all our concepts. Wondering wheather the soul is finite or infinite will hinder spiritual progress. The goal of Buddhism is enlightnment-you cannot possibly achieve that by philosophy and logic.
If you want I can give straight foward sayings from Buddhist roshis(priests)

Angel of Death: can you comprehensively tell me why you think Buddhism isn't a philosophy?

Some would point out the irony of pursuing questions which the Buddha was often prone to refuse to answer, on the grounds that they were non-conducive to enlightenment. Buddhism teaches practical methods- meditation>enlightenment, which enable people to realise and utilise its philosophical teachings.

I would have to disagree, I believe the struggle to find an answer leads to creative thinking. For example the question alone sparked a conversation on philospohy

Ok heres one to think about...

The Acme Arms Company has invented a Super Bullet: a Super Bullet penetrates anything it hits. But the Adamantine Armor company has invented a Super Strong Armor Plate: nothing that hits a Super Strong Armor Plate penetrates it. The army is planning to shoot a Super Bullet at a Super Strong Armor Plate. What will happen?

thats the whole point Zato, that its not logical. Logic collapses if it is capable of deriving a contradiction, such as this one. The task is to think beyond logical reasoning (which most people can't do, or at least find difficult).

Exactly, thats what I m saying. You have to let go of your intelect and reasoning. Isn't a large part of philosphy concerend with the intellect and reasoning, be it metaphysical?

A lot of philosophy is interpreted through logical reasoning. However some philosophy is beyond that. Metaphysics is generally not fallible, testable or provable. There is no valid set of empirical observations nor a valid set of logical arguments which could prove metaphysical statements to be true or false.

If you think illogically then reality becomes much more interesting.

Summit, no matter how 'out of the box' the philosphical argument is, u still have to use your 'brains'.

Angel of Death: I'm not sure if you think I'm doubting the nature and origin of philosophical thought. It is obvious and self-explanatory that thought requires brains.
