we were using a motoralla hcs12 and writing to it using cosmic compiler and cosmic zap while the cpu was connected via the printer port.
it was all written in low level programming language about as close to machine code as you can get with out writing wholly in hex. if ur that interested ill send you a copy of the program. the last thing we wrote was a program that made the light move up or down the row of LED's one place when the left or right button was pressed and jump back to the other end when u pressed it too many times.

Doesn't realise that these days you're not truly a nerd till you have a fair understanding of how to fabricate the cpu and leds from raw materials and then program the OS.
