Getting along with stupid/bullheaded people

Okay, but let me clarify about the agree to disagree: If I don't believe in "God" and Jane does, we CAN come to the joint decision that there is no factual evidence supporting the "God" theory, but she will still have that faith, and I will not.
Does that make sense? This defintely shouldn't be used as a cop-out, but as a rule that hey, people have their own oppinions.
I can agree with the speek personally one, it dosen't apply everywhere.

It seems like a good idea if the thread is getting too long and not a single conclusion has been drawn.

Oh, but maybe these rules shouldn't apply to certain threads seeing as how there has to be some freedom on this site.

Dug: The thread doesn't have to become long if you follow these rules from the begining. The point of a thread isn't to have it long, it is to reach a conclusion

Also, you apply these rules as you see fit. The less you do and the more argumentative you are, the less respect you'll get from your peers, and the less worthy your statements become in the long run.

Wes: Agreed... But I'd say things like faith and god are one of the few beliefs that cannot be discussed... I mean, faith in almost anything else can be logically discussed. But yeah.. I think we should clarify that if you believe something ONLY through faith, with no premises whatsoever in believing that, then you should not continue to argue, and you should state that from the beggining.

I strongly recommend that you ignore people who do not attempt to utlize logic in their discussions.

This will aid us in cleansing the site of stupidity and encourage new people to join in.

And when I say ignore, I mean completely ignore. Ask them very direct questions and if they choose not to answer them, from that point forward you return the favour and pay no attention to their posts.

This, as I've learned, is the only way to keep the discussions flowing as efficiently as possible.

Decius: Bullheaded people who are unaware of themselves blunder through life. Without realizing it, they hurt themselves, their family and their friends. I know this because some of my family is like that. If you could only realize what a fucked up mess they make their lives, you couldn’t hate them, only feel sorry for them.

hmm keeping out personal matters at all times is rather difficult... i very often use them to make points, that kind of thing does belong in the General section for the most part tho... i like these rules but i must admit it will be difficult for me to adhere to them at all times... ill do my best tho.

The only stupid person is the person that can't see that he/she is stupid at times as well. No matter how logical anyone is, someday they will vote for a G.W. Bush. Just because everyone doesn't wear a hog-ring in their nose for you to lead them around doesn't mean they don't think you should have one too.

See? Brann just demonstrated a good example of what I'm talking about. If you approach a situation with closed-mindedness and allow bias to cloud your judgement.

Hence, any discussions have at the base of them a desire not to agree, regardless of logic.

Squat: Your statements are valid for a percentage of people, I'm sure. Many people believe that the other person is being unreasonable, whereas both members may be being unreasonable.

But the question you have to ask yoruself then is:

Are you able to be convinced otherwise? When was the last time you completely agreed with someone when at the begining of the discussion you were on opposite ends?

The reason I started this thread is to address not only the people who blatently try to instigate argument in every which way, but also the people who simply desire not to lose, and due to this eventually digress into a pool of illogical namecalling or insulting that does not lead anywhere.

I think it is much easier to scrutizie your own behaviour to ascertain that you are not closed minded than you make it out to be, Squat.

Where is the logic. You post logic on any topic and someone seems to be able to top that logic with there logic. Its all in how someone feels or what they find on the internet. There are many things that will differ. Thats all I am saying.
I dont think people need to take it to name calling but everyone sees things differant and that isnt going to change (yes, call it close minded).
Like the American bashing on here. I think it is uncalled for, I dont think we need to bash anyone....American, Canadian, etc. but I see all these Canadians bashing Americans and America. Deal with your own issues over there and stop worrying about what to say next about America.

There's the fallous thinking. It's not how you FEEL. Don't discuss if you're trying to support your statements with FEELINGS. You are then closed minded, because feelings do not change with logic. Logic is not feeling.

I haven't witnissed any America bashing on here. Only Bush bashing (as well as Kerry bashing), and neither represent "Americans". I have yet to see a "racist" remark about Americans. So you reacting to the assumptions that people are insulting Americans causes you to "feel" resentment, which closes your mind to possibilities. Hence the bullheadedness, due to feeling.

No one has to shut off anything. it's all about time and place. The Poetry section wouldn't have been created if feelings weren't entirely welcommed here.

The point of this thread is you don't think Nuclear War won't happen because you "feel" it wont. And if you argue based on the "Feeling" that war won't happen, you are stupid, because it is illogical.

UNLESS, you admit it is based on a feeling, and youb elieve that is intuition.

I personally think people who are bullheaded (and therefore are unable to communicate efficiently) are limited in their intelligence.
