but I fear that he sleeps soundly [+ favourites]

“I wonder if Mr Blair imagined what sadness he would cause when he announced that we were “shoulder to shoulder” with President Bush and America? That night we watched the news and saw Tony Blair standing with the President, claiming that the war had so far been “a success”. I respect that a number of bereaved parents stepped forward to support the conflict, but I never thought that I could be so ashamed at the single-minded aggression with which this Government invaded Iraq. The military is asking bereaved families to make suggestions for a memorial service; mine is simply that our Prime Minister and any other MPs with blood on their hands have the decency to stay away.
Anger now plays a dominant role in my grieving process, Mr Blair. Recently you said you were ready to stand before your maker and be accountable for the lives that your decisions have taken. Perhaps prior to that, and more realistically, you might want to spend some time with my parents explaining how they lost their only son in a war that has reached no solution. “Things can only get better” was the election slogan six years ago, but today in our Labour-governed household, things could not be any worse. My irreplaceable brother died a violent and unnecessary death at your delegation, leaving our hardworking family with a cruel legacy that we will never overcome.
During the night I lie awake trying to understand how a person so loved and talented can really be gone from my life for ever. Sometimes I wonder if our Prime Minister joins me in these lonely hours to consider the lives that have been torn apart, but I fear that he sleeps soundly.”

Its war people die, and not many died this war. I mean britain has more dead in car accidents each year then their casualties.

That doesn't invalidate the feelings of someone who has lost a loved one, and who is confused as to why.

People spend thousands of dollars on finding a lost child, so it is obvious every life is important in some regard.

Of course, but one must also think of the potential Irakis that will be saved. Saddam was a fairly brutal dictator, one must think about how 30 dead brits freed a people from a vioent regime.

I think that is the whole point of the letter written by Catherine Green: That she cannot find meaning in her loss. That it seems it was not worth it. That her brother died for the wrong reasons.

Therefore, "the potential Irakis that will be saved." does not apply to her because she seems to believe that that wasn't the reason her brother did die.

Hence her statement "a war that has reached no solution".

Catherine Green is right that there is no rhyme or reason to her brother’s death, but to those who did not lose that which is precious to them call it acceptable on the road to building a "better society". There have been those who have died building bridges, tunnels, damns and skyscrapers so that the elite can drive their cars, have electricity and have offices from which to make more money and build the "better society". The workers that died took their jobs to make money to support themselves and those they loved. In short a soldier who does not die because they were a crusader, died doing a job they were paid to do. There is your why, but even the why shouldn’t invalidate Catherine’s grief. But that doesn’t mean that you can blame someone else (Mr. Blair) for what occurs to a man who freely took a job and its risks for monetary supplement.

I can't agree to that, although it is a logical deduction. I am certain that serving in the army for many men and women is moreso a question of loyalty and moral obligation than it is for money.

The money doesn't hurt, but I'm certain they didn't sign up with the knowledge that they may be put in harms way for no real moral reason.

Hence it is legitimate for a wounded soldier or the family of a lost soldier to be dissatisfied with the outcome because the loss was sacrificed for false reasons.

I don't know if you people care about the "mass graves" being uncovered everyday in Iraq! Saddam is not a nice guy. I think dubya & the prime minister could have made better arguments for the war in Iraq. The islamacists are trying to destroy us. Feelings and emotions have nothing to do with facts and being logic. God bless Prime Minister Blair & President Bush for doing what was necessary for a safer world!

Irak was not a threat. There was not enough proof before the war tok call Irak a threat. And even AFTER the war is over, there is still no proof he was a threat.
Damn Bush for lying/being incredibly misleading to the US.

Your right that Saddam was a cruel man, and the effects of this war may be beneficial, but the motives for the war were selfish or lies.
