“I wonder if Mr Blair imagined what sadness he would cause when he announced that we were “shoulder to shoulder” with President Bush and America? That night we watched the news and saw Tony Blair standing with the President, claiming that the war had so far been “a success”. I respect that a number of bereaved parents stepped forward to support the conflict, but I never thought that I could be so ashamed at the single-minded aggression with which this Government invaded Iraq. The military is asking bereaved families to make suggestions for a memorial service; mine is simply that our Prime Minister and any other MPs with blood on their hands have the decency to stay away. Anger now plays a dominant role in my grieving process, Mr Blair. Recently you said you were ready to stand before your maker and be accountable for the lives that your decisions have taken. Perhaps prior to that, and more realistically, you might want to spend some time with my parents explaining how they lost their only son in a war that has reached no solution. “Things can only get better” was the election slogan six years ago, but today in our Labour-governed household, things could not be any worse. My irreplaceable brother died a violent and unnecessary death at your delegation, leaving our hardworking family with a cruel legacy that we will never overcome. During the night I lie awake trying to understand how a person so loved and talented can really be gone from my life for ever. Sometimes I wonder if our Prime Minister joins me in these lonely hours to consider the lives that have been torn apart, but I fear that he sleeps soundly.” Catherine Green, sister of Sea King helicopter pilot Phillip Green, one of the 32 British servicemen killed in the 2003 Iraq war [The Times May 29th 2003] http://www.chumba.com/_thisjustin2.htm
