Free Speech

Sure, we can all simply say "everything should be allowed" however, people can step over the line. People could argue that pornography should be allowed to be seen by all, and allowed on daytime television - if not, it isn't free speech for all. Violence - same thing- no violence allowed = no free speech. Would you allow your kids to watch pronography and graphic violence as young as 5? Things need to be censored for people's welfare.

if everything were allowed, i think our perceptions of what is right and wrong would change significantly... altho i dont know if it would be for the better or for the worse.

i dunno about the everything should be alowed thingie ..... i don't think we should allow serious crimes, but there are a lot of dumb laws outhere
so i think many of those should be changed ( of course they won't be because they are there to protect our rights . i dunno about you but i don't really like overprotection )
and i think it would be ok if they showed porn on tv......maybe I wouldn't allow MY kids to watch it if they were 5 years old (it's not like they'd like it either) but if it was out there that would atleast make some people calm the fuck down
because we always want what we can't have, and by making it illigal to have some things the gorvernment makes a very big deal out of them , and it makes us want to have them even more.

I think we are venturing off into other areas to scare the FREE speech out of eachother, lol; freedom of speech does not mean that we can show Porn on daytime public television. I believe that we shouldn't censor anything "said" which includes: Fuck, shit, bitch, whore, slut, asshole, cunt, pussy, twat, or fag. Period, point blank. However, freedom to show graphic sexual acts does not fit into expressing ones thoughts on any particular issue.

but yeah i don't think that not allowing some words on TV is right .... there should be a law that says that all words are equal and used for the same purpose - to express our thoughts ...... and not allowing some words is almost like racism

Interesting I been in countries where nudity wasn't prohibited (Nipppon), but they had a different set of moral issues. They have (had) communal bath houses, they also lacked our sensitivity about social contact, men and women may hung or hold one another without impling the social taboo of being gay. Restriction may be necessary to some but infants & young adolesents acquire the preoccupation by our social values. It is too bad they can not remain innocent of the negative conitation we apply to them.

I think the issue of free speech is fairly clear cut.

We need a marketplace of ideas. Only when people can challenge the beliefs of peers and government can any form of representative government work.

To silence those that don't agree with the government is tyrrany, which is why the first ammendment to the Constitution protects this right.

However, this right to free speech must be limited. It is granted to us under the basic principles of Locke's social contract which states that we give up rights for protection by the government. Therefore, while the government must grant the right to free speech, it must also limit this right as provided by the Constitution "In time, place, or manner." So, while you have the right to denouce the policy of the U.S. president, you do not have the right to make a public threat against his life. You can get up on stage and say what you want, but you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. See the difference? Your rights only extend sofar that they do not infringe upon the rights of another.

What's my point? The government must protect free speech up to the point where it does not put other people at risk of losing rights.

If that is an honest attempt on his life, backed by the ability and desire to do so, then you can be prosecuted for what amounts to treason.

Besides, if someone were to quote you as the source and reason as to why they killed the president, you may also be held liable for conspiracy.

See-your rights only extend as far as they stay out of the way of others. Once you cross the line (i.e. a public threat), you no longer have the legal right to do so.
