All photos taken 16/12/09 Day: 5 For a while we're free again, climbing trees and fences, running across tar roads and waving our hands about in the warmth of the afternoon sun. We talk about caterpillars and dead people, and contemplate the possibility of snakes eating up our brains and carrying our dreams away in their bellies. As we grow tired, we wander home in the evening, sharing old stories and laughing off the growing cold, smiling effortlessly at each other. Then the sun disappears over the horizon and the lamps light up, and suddenly we're in that strange land again, where things seem to shift and take on their old weight. Your eyes narrow and become serious in the dark, and I know you're thinking your grown-up thoughts because I have those too. So the closer we get to home, the quieter we become, and the next time we turn to give our smiles to each other, they've become strained and lined with the worries of our real lives. And the world just grows darker after that.
