"It's cold and gloomy here in New York, but that's okay because the weather fits my mood -- gloomy. Dad, the world [img=http://www.captaincynic.com/images/articles/sam1.gif]is getting dark now. I can feel it more and more. The people, they are developing a hatred for me. You wouldn't believe how much some people hate me. Many of them want to kill me. I don't even know these people, but still they hate me. Most of them are young. I walk down the street and they spit and kick at me. The girls call me ugly and they bother me the most. The guys just laugh. Anyhow, things will soon change for the better." - A letter to his father His biological mother put him up for adoption at birth due to financial duress. He was obese and did not get along with others. He was highly introverted and felt unnatractive. His foster mother, possibly the only woman in his life that cared about him, died of breast cancer after high school. His stepfather re-married and moved away with his new wife (who did not get along with David) and left David alone. David became a security guard, then joined the army briefly where he learned to shoot a rifle. He fooled with arson for a time, setting upwards of 1,500 fires in New York. Destitute and completely alone he moved from place to place, living in apartments of low caliber. Typically, these locations had many dogs around them and were prone to [img=http://www.captaincynic.com/images/articles/sam2.gif]ba rking and howling on a constant basis. For nearly three months of his life, Berkowitz slept almost no hours and often laid in bed screaming for the dogs to stop howling. This is when his "demons" started to speak to him. David started to hear voices in the dogs that hounded him, and his diseased mind contemplated that these were demons demanding blood. "The demons never stopped. I couldn't sleep. I had no strength to fight. I could barely drive. Coming home from work one night, I almost killed myself in the car. I needed to sleep....The demons wouldn't give me any peace."
David Berkowitz, known as the "Son of Sam" or ".44 Caliber Killer" obtained a .44 caliber handgun at this time in his life, and began a series of brutal murders targeted mainly at young beautiful women. For over a year the city of New York was terrorized by the demon infested Berkowitz, who shot and killed 6 people and wounded others. All of his murders ocurred at night, and [img=http://www.captaincynic.com/images/articles/samletter.g if]mainly when a woman was alone or with another person in an isolated situation. Many couples in their cars were assaulted, and women walking home or around their neighbourhood at odd hours of the night were also targets. Claiming to hear orders from the demonic dogs of his neighbours, Berkowitz labeled his neighbour Sam Carr the enbodyment of Father Sam, the demon. He also carried with him a Satanic Bible and performed the murders as sacrifice for his master. Berkowitz claimed that Sam spoke to him and promised him that his first victim, Donna Lauria, would rise up from the dead and become his bride.
After connecting letters together and also the reports of his neighbours, and finally an investigated parking ticket, David Berkowitz was captured outside his appartment. Upon being caught, Sam was a soft-spoken and constantly [img=http://www.captaincynic.com/images/articles/sam3.gif]sm iling individual who seemed aloof and happy to be finally captured. <blockquote>The man inside did not see the approaching figures. Gardella came from the rear of the car and put the barrel of his gun against the man's head. "Freeze!" he yelled. "Police!" The man inside the car turned around and smiled idiotically at them. Falotico gave him very explicit instructions to slowly get out of the car and put his hands up on the roof. The man obeyed, still smiling. "Now that I've got you," Falotico said, "who have I got?" "You know," the man said politely. "No, I don't. You tell me." Still smiling his moronic smile, he answered, "I'm Sam. David Berkowitz."</blockquote> Currently in prison, David Berkowitz is now a converted and [img=http://www.captaincynic.com/images/articles/sam4.gif]de voted Christian. He attended his first parole hearing on July 9, 2002. When asked about his memories of the murders, he replied: <blockquote>"Ma'am, I'm sorry. I don't know. I don't understand what happened….It was a nightmare. I was tormented in my mind and in my spirit. My life was out of control at that time and I have nothing but regret for what happened." "What was this torment?" "It was just my mind was not focused right. I thought I was a soldier for the devil and all kinds of crazy things…I had things like the satanic bible that I was reading. I just got stupid ideas out of it. I'm not pushing the blame on anything. I take full responsibility, but I just – at the time things got twisted." David admitted to being sexually excited when he killed young girls and would often masturbate afterwards.</blockquote> David was denied parole due to his lack of knowledge as to why he committed the crimes he did. His next parole hearing is in June, 2004. |
